Transfer Bench Or Shower Chair For The Elderly?

Mrs. “K” was 83 years old. She was originally from Oklahoma, but now she lives with her husband of 50 some odd years in the central valley of California. They live in a single story home that has 5-6 steps to enter. There’s no stairs inside, but, there are a couple of step ups or down. These are the results of her husband building additions on the original home. You can tell it’s not original, but, it doesn’t look bad.

I am visiting Mrs..”K” because she has recently had a total knee surgery. It’s my job to get her exercising and start a walking program. It’s also important to make sure she can get into her shower/tub safely because falling on a knee that’s just had surgery is not a good idea.

There are a lot of people out there like Mrs..”K”. Having knee and hip replacements are pretty common in people her age. There are a lot of elderly who have orthopedic surgeries everyday. And, they need to be safe once they get back home.

Which Is Better? Tub Transfer Bench Or Shower Chair?

Looking at her bathroom I quickly found out that she needed a tub transfer bench rather than a shower chair. This is because she had bathtub/shower combo. What made it even more challenging was the fact that her tub was shaped like a triangle!

Rule of thumb: If you have a shower stall, use a “shower chair“. If you have a bathtub or combo, use a tub transfer bench.

Most of the time, people who’re recovering from hip/knee/foot surgery get a tub transfer bench to use for when they take a shower. This is because climbing into and sitting down in the tub for a bath is next to impossible. And, even if they did get into the tub, the bigger problem would be finding a way to get out of the tub.

A tub transfer bench isn’t made for a shower stall. This is because transfer benches are generally a little bigger than shower chairs and take up more room in the shower.

For these people, trying to take a regular shower is almost just as challenging as getting into the bathtub. If you have a shower stall, having a shower chair is usually a simple fix. But, as in the case of Mrs.”K”, the shower is usually part of the bath/shower combo. This means she would have to find a way to get into the tub safely.

Most elderly people who’ve had a surgery on their legs will generally have a lot of pain also. This can make getting into and standing up in a shower stall or bathtub difficult.

A Tub Transfer Bench Or Shower Chair Provides Some Security

This is the reason why so many choose to get a tub transfer bench. Basically all you have to do is sit down on the portion of the seat that sits outside of the tub and then lift your legs into the tub and slide over.

For most elderly people who are having trouble getting around or, who may have had a recent surgery, this is the best way to go. Yeah, it makes getting into and out of the tub easier, but, it also provides a lot of assurance to family members because it reduces the potential for falling.

We recommended a basic shower chair for Mrs.”K”. Her husband was able to put it together pretty easily and adjust it to her height that of the bathtub too.

Before we discharged her from home care services, we made sure that she was able to shower safely and that she was comfortable with her tub transfer bench

When A Tub Transfer Bench May Not Work

The tub transfer bench will generally work on the majority of the differing types of bathtubs that people use. There are only a few instances where there may be an issue. 1) if there are shower doors on the tub, 2) If the sides of the tub are higher than the typical bathtub, and, 3) A tub transfer bench may not work on some spa tubs.

In general if you or someone you know has difficulty stepping over the side of the tub to bathe, then a tub transfer bench (like this one, or this one ) may be more appropriate for you to use rather than a shower chair.

Sliding Tub Transfer Benches

Some people need a sliding tub transfer bench rather than a regular shower chair or even stationary transfer tub bench. There are a bunch of different conditions that people may have who would best benefit from a sliding transfer tub bench. The University of Missouri Physical Therapy dept recommends them for the elderly.

Sliding tub transfer benches are made for people who don’t have the leg or arm strength or leverage needed to scoot on the bench into the tub. This may be due to a broken arm or leg (or both). There But the main problem that most of these people have is that they have a very difficult time moving and need someone to do most, if not all, of the work.

Using a sliding tub transfer bench is basically the same as using a regular tub transfer bench. Rather than stepping into the tub, you sit on the seat outside of it. Then lifting your legs over the edge of the tub so that they are on the inside and then, slide over. If you can’t lift your legs over the edge yourself, then you’ll have to have someone lift them over for you.

Different Sliding Tub Transfer Benches

Now there are a couple of different options that are available for sliding tub transfer benches. Snap-and Save makes a basic model of sliding tub transfer bench. You can compare that to this folding tub transfer bench which may make it easy to store.

And, then again, if you need something that is more permanent, there is another sliding tub transfer bench that mounts to the side of the tub. If you’re using this particular model, you don’t have to worry about having to have extra floor space in your bathroom to accommodate the outside legs.
